Mel’s has been serving Berrien Springs for over 38 years. This is a locally owned and family-operated business. Mel's is owned by Darlene Kuhens. She purchased the business from her father. And the business itself has been in the Kuhens family for generations! Mel’s offers individuals with a unique experience. Darlene makes everyone feel like they are special when they walk through the door, every customer is greeted with a smile!

Our Story
Mel’s Place has always been about serving the community. Long before we offered multiple services under one roof, we were simply a small, family-run convenience store on the corner — a friendly stop where locals grabbed snacks, coffee, or gas on their way to work.
As Berrien Springs grew and changed, so did we. Listening to our customers shaped the direction of Mel’s Place more than anything else. People needed quick food options—so we added Midwest Juicery, wraps and grab-and-go meals prepared with care. Families needed more storage space—so we built secure units with easy access. Students and travelers needed shipping and mailbox services—so we brought in virtual mailboxes and package handling. When people needed moving trucks nearby, we partnered with U-Haul.
Every new service came from a simple question: “What does our community need?”
And each time, we did our best to provide it.
Today, Mel’s Place has become a local landmark—still family-operated, still rooted in small-town values, and still committed to growing alongside Berrien Springs.
